What if moving home left more money for living? Newark bans landlords from making renters pay their broker fees
Reported by Yahoo
Publisher date:

Newark has banned landlords from passing their brokerage costs to tenants, including through rent increases, added charges or reduced benefits. The protection covers both market-rate and affordable apartments, removing a permitted charge from the cost of moving in. The ordinance establishes a protection, not evidence yet of how much renters will save.
Moving costs are not all inevitable: cities can change who pays them. Newark’s rule protects renters from landlords’ brokerage charges, though its practical impact remains to be measured.
