A Better Home Needn’t Mean Higher Rent: Troy Renovates 341 Public Housing Units With the Right to Return at the Same Rent
Reported by Troy Record
Publisher date:

A $152 million renovation of 341 public housing homes across four complexes in Troy, New York, is complete, with upgraded kitchens, bathrooms, flooring and lighting. Tenants were temporarily housed in vacant housing authority units and had the right to return without rent increases. The properties also include 20 units accommodating mobility disabilities and eight accommodating sensory disabilities.
Improving homes need not price out the people living in them. Troy paired completed renovations with tenants’ right to return without rent increases, showing how housing investment can protect affordability.
