Three Newsrooms Lost Their White House Passes. The Last Time That Happened, a Federal Judge Ordered the Reporters Back In.
Reported by The Associated Press
Publisher date:
CNN, MS NOW and Politico journalists were turned away from the White House on 19 September and say their press passes were confiscated; all three signalled First Amendment challenges. In a closely analogous case, a federal judge ruled the government could not punish the Associated Press for the content of its speech and ordered its access restored.
The fear in this story is that a government can simply decide which journalists cover it. The record shows the constitutional machinery for contesting that has already been used, and has already produced a ruling on the principle.
