Tenants Don’t Have to Be Faultless to Have Rights: Porirua Renters Win Compensation for Baseless Eviction Threats
Reported by RNZ
Publisher date:
The Tenancy Tribunal ordered a Porirua landlord to pay former tenants $3391.64 after finding harassment involving baseless eviction threats and other breaches. The tenants also owed more than $700 for breaches of their own, but those failings did not prevent the tribunal from holding the landlord accountable.
The decision shows tenants can challenge landlord harassment successfully even when they have also breached their tenancy agreement.
