Home to 200 Butterfly Species, Mount Mabu Is Now Formally Protected—and Governed by the Villagers Living on Its Slopes
Reported by Mongabay
Publisher date:
Mozambique has formally designated the 23,000-acre Mount Mabu Community Conservation Area, shielding a vital rainforest sanctuary rich with hundreds of butterfly species and rare wildlife. Instead of handing administration to distant state agencies or private concessions, the legal decree places long-term management directly into the hands of resident mountain communities. The initiative establishes a sustainable conservation model where local residents have both the authority and incentive to preserve their native ecosystem.
Entrusting ecological treasures to the communities living beside them proves conservation works best when local people are empowered as its primary guardians.
