Fishing could be safer for seabirds: Cornwall fishers tested kites that lowered the odds of catching them
Reported by Good Good Good
Publisher date:

A trial with 10 Cornish fishers found that nets fitted with bird-of-prey kites had 71% lower odds of catching guillemots and razorbills, while spinning eye buoys had 59% lower odds. The results offer practical ways to protect diving birds, though weather, possible seal attraction and birds learning to ignore deterrents require further attention.
Fishers and researchers have demonstrated that changes to fishing gear can reduce accidental seabird catches, giving them a tested starting point for better protection.
