California signed Executive Order N-9-26 on Friday, pulling the launch of its independent AI auditor system forward by roughly two years and ordering recommendations on an emergency shut-off for frontier models by 16 November.
The dominant coverage is that no one can restrain frontier AI. The same week, one of the jurisdictions where those models are built brought its independent inspection regime forward from 2028-29 to 2027 and put a shut-off requirement on the table.
