A Future With Fewer Babies Acquiring HIV: Gabon Study Links Mothers’ Preventive Care to Far Fewer Infant Infections
Reported by bioengineer.org
Publisher date:

A study of 713 HIV-exposed children in Gabon found that 2.3 percent whose mothers received preventive treatment tested HIV-positive, compared with 37.9 percent whose mothers received none. The findings support the promise of maternal prevention, but only 12.5 percent of children completed the full early diagnostic testing schedule.
The findings offer evidence that protecting more mothers could help more babies avoid HIV, while showing that repeated testing and follow-up remain essential.
