Independent teams in Vienna and Beijing have built the world’s first two operating nuclear clocks, turning an ambition pursued by physicists for almost 50 years into working instruments. The devices could eventually improve timekeeping and tests of fundamental physics, although they do not yet outperform the best conventional atomic clocks.

Two independent successes show that a long-imagined way to measure nature can work, opening a path towards better clocks and new physics experiments.
